The Concept Sophrosyne in the Platonic Dialogues and its Depiction in Socrates ´ Figure
Main Article Content
Abstract
Sanity (sophrosí½ne/σωφÏοσÏνη) is a recurring topic throughout the platonic dialogues. However, the relationship between Socrates and self-knowledge is not yet clear. Hence, in the following text, I will begin by determining the relationship between self-knowledge and sophrosí½nein order to stablish how is the concept of sophrosí½ne defined in the dialogues and how can one reach it. Afterwards, I will address the question regarding Socrates ´ sanity according to his own definition, question that will receive a negative answer. Nonetheless, I will argue that Socrates does not only count with the knowledge necessary to achieve sophrosí½ne, but also, there seems to be that there is nothing that should stop him from achieving sophrosí½ne.
