Abstract

In Philo’s treatises, the concept πολίτης “citizen” plays an essential role in the task of understanding the historical configuration and functioning of the community within the Alexandrian society, because it allows us to know not only what was the social place occupied by Jews in the city, but also the relationship between Jews and other population groups which integrated the same social space. In our study, then, we will analyze the civic use of πολίτης in Life of Moses and in the historical treatises Against Flaccus and Gaius Embassy, in connection with the vocabulary and historical events that can be included within the margins of his interpretation
